Check seconds, milliseconds and time zones

Logs commonly record Unix timestamps in seconds or milliseconds. A timestamp represents an instant without a display time zone, so local and UTC dates can differ.

An example to check

Input and settings

Enter 1704067200 or 1704067200000; the tool detects seconds or milliseconds automatically.

Expected result

UTC: 2024-01-01T00:00:00.000Z

Both inputs should identify the same instant. In Beijing the local time is 2024-01-01 08:00. Normalize units before converting a batch.

Scope and limitations

  • Absolute values below 10^12 are interpreted as seconds; others as milliseconds. Early millisecond or distant second timestamps may be misclassified. Check the date against the original unit.
  • A date without a time zone may be interpreted in the browser local zone. Prefer ISO dates with Z or an explicit offset when exchanging data across regions.
