Resizing preserves the image; cropping changes the framing

Decide whether you need proportional resizing or a crop for an avatar or cover. Locking the ratio links width and height; a centered crop removes edges.

An example to check

Input and settings

1600 × 900 → width 800

Expected result

800 × 450

The 16:9 ratio is retained and both dimensions are halved. For a subsequent square crop, check whether the subject was cut off rather than checking dimensions alone.

Scope and limitations

  • Enlarging a small image adds pixels but cannot restore missing detail.
  • Pixel dimensions and print DPI are different. Calculate the required pixel count separately for a physical print size.
