Reduce pixels, then compare quality and file size

Compress images for upload limits, web illustrations or sharing. The balanced preset caps the long edge at 1920 pixels and uses its quality setting for formats that support lossy compression.

An example to check

Input and settings

A 3000 × 2000 image with the balanced preset.

Expected result

1920 × 1280

The scale is 1920/3000, giving a short edge of 1280. Inspect text, edges and gradients after downloading and compare byte sizes. There is no guaranteed compression percentage.

Scope and limitations

  • Smaller images are not enlarged for compression. PNG quality settings do not behave like JPEG lossy quality, and the output may be larger than the original.
  • Prefer PNG or WebP for transparency. JPEG loses the alpha channel, so inspect the resulting background and details.
