Instructions

Generate hash digest of text

Use when validating content, comparing signatures, or recording irreversible digests.

1Paste text
2Choose SHA-1, SHA-256 or SHA-512
3Copy hash result

Compare identical bytes, not just similar-looking text

The tool supports SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 for text or files. A digest can detect changes: the same algorithm and identical bytes should produce the same result.

Input and settings

abc

Expected result

ba7816bf8f01cfea414140de5dae2223b00361a396177a9cb410ff61f20015ad

Choose SHA-256 and enter abc without a newline. The result has 64 hexadecimal characters. Adding a trailing newline changes the digest.

Scope and limitations

  • There is no MD5 option. SHA-1 is unsuitable when collision resistance is required; prefer SHA-256 for new integrity checks.
  • A plain SHA digest is not a password-storage scheme and does not encrypt a file. Obtain an expected download digest from a trusted source.
